When I Grow Up...

I have really been thinking a lot lately about what I want to do with my life--career-wise. I LOVE being a stay at home momma and I don't think I should be in any hurry to make a change. Really, I have plenty of choices; I'm just being stubborn about picking I guess.
As we were driving to the store the other day, John asked if I ever gave anymore thought to being a cop.
Heck ya!
Being a cop was always something I wanted to pursue. I don't know if it was because my daddy was one, or if it actually came from inside ME. Either way, just the thought of wearing a uniform, slapping handcuffs on a drunken idiot, and passing out sticker badges to kids at the fair gives me a wonderful feeling.
Sad huh.
Then there's being a Respiratory Therapist. I finished 1 semester of that when I was pregnant with Christian. Something about being put on complete bedrest threw a huge kink in that one. I had fun doing clinicals at the hospitals, but then again...do I really want to spend my life rearranging nasal canulas, tubing people, and suctioning phlegm from nasty places?
Honestly, it doesn't sound terribly appealing now.
What about the Dental Hygiene degree I was working toward? There's an interesting career! Hmmmm..something about picking nastiness out of peoples' teeth on a daily basis has me at a big NEGATORY GOOD BUDDY.
Hmph.
Ok, so I guess the Army is now out of the question too (yes, I really did used to want to join). :)
I have had friends blog recently about the age-old debate: to stay at home or work. It is a tough question, but I think I'll leave it up to Him to decide. For now, I'll stick to changing poopy diapers, wiping snotty noses, and washing dirty laundry.
Way more appealing!

The Husband Is Always Right?!?

Today at church (Trinity), Caitlin decided that she wanted to come to "big church" and stay with us. We explained that it could possibly be boring, but she was willing to go anyway. We had a guest speaker today and he had a great message. He preached on grace, which was very interesting.
At one point, he was comparing the Law of the Old Testament to an overbearing husband who was always right. He explained that Christians who still live under the Law are constantly worried and have performance anxiety when it comes to everyday life. When Jesus came, he gave us a way out of that "marriage" to the Law---we could live under grace and have that as our new husband. Make sense? :)
So let's fast forward to Chili's after church. As we were unloading the kids from the car, I stayed in my seat a minute longer to rearrange the diaper bag. John said something about me needing to hurry up, and I shot back some smart-elec comment. Caitlin piped up out of the back seat:
"Momma, remember what the preacher said. The husband is ALWAYS right!"
John patted her on the back and said, "Way to go Cait! I knew there was a reason we brought you to big church today. See what you've learned!"
Sheesh! I have a feeling Caitlin will be going back to her own church service next Sunday! :)

Christian Funny #83,453,742

On the way to school this morning, Caitlin hollered from the back seat, "Hey Mom! Today is DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) day! I am so excited!"
Christian piped up and asked if he could go too. I told him that he would have to wait until he got big enough to go to school. After a few minutes of complete silence, he asks, "Hey Sissie....are you gonna bring home the deer?"
"What deer Christian? I'm going to school!" she replied.
"No Sissie, the deer at school! You have to bring it home!" he argued, very frustrated at this point.
"Christian, DEAR day is where Sissie gets to read her books. It's not the other deer you are thinking about. She's just going to be reading," I interjected.
I looked in the rear view mirror and saw a very confused and grumpy 3 year old with his arms crossed pouting in his car seat. He whispered, "She better bring that deer home!" :)

Recovering

For those of you that know about my dad (and even for those who don't), his surgery was a huge success! Originally, the doctor thought he'd have to remove up to 6 inches of his small and large intestine combined, as well as his appendix and surrounding lymph nodes. The doctor found a mass near the appendix about 2 weeks ago during a routine screening--the mass was the size of a ping pong ball. Amazingly, the doctor didn't have to do half of what he thought he would. Instead, my dad had what is called a "radical appendectomy." The doctor only removed the appendix and a small piece of surrounding intestine along with the mass. Also, the mass was found to still be benign, so PRAISE GOD that it had not turned cancerous!
Thank you all for your prayers and support during this time. My dad continues to be blessed through this process--no cancer and a much less complicated surgery. I couldn't ask for more! :)

Wild Amarillo Hares!

So after much nagging, my wonderful friend Tina made a family blog!! I have been telling her about how much fun I have with mine and that I would like to have a blog from her to read daily. Also, I wanted to see pics of her precious baby boy, John, to brighten my day. :) This is a very loving, God-centered, happy family...I know you will be blessed by them as much as we have been. I met Tina & her husband Randy when I volunteered at the Crisis Pregnancy Center. She taught one of the the volunteer introduction classes, and I just remember being amazed at not only how honest she could be with kids at local schools (she taught on abstinence), but just by how much energy she radiated. I tell everyone that she is my older sister---Mom just forgot to tell me I had one. :)

New Name For Us

Something comical happened today. I called the wonderful (I'm being sarcastic by saying that) health insurance company to get some kinks worked out with a claim, and the customer service lady was quite a treat. Normally I get the crappy apple that either forgot to have a cup of coffee or the one who's dog died the night before and they needed someone to take it out on. This lady, however, was kind from the get-go. She asked me for the usual: my policy number, birthday, full name...and when I told her my full name, she began to giggle. She proceeded to tell me that she loved my last name. What?!? She said that her family had just moved from Oklahoma to Texas and her children went to a school there called Haskell Elementary. Get this---they were the Haskell Rascals! HA! I started laughing and said that I'd have to use that from now on. So, we are no longer the Haskells 5---just consider us the Haskell Rascals. Very fitting! :)

GO CAITLIN!

I feel like alot of times, Caitlin doesn't get as much "blog time" as the 2 smaller children---so I have to share this. I took her to her 1st Kids Inc. volleyball practice last night and she was AMAZING! Caitlin hasn't ever picked up a volleyball before, but you wouldn't have known it by watching. I dropped her off at the gym and ran some errands for the 1st half of the practice. When I returned to watch the 2nd half, one of the moms asked me if Caitlin had played before. I told her no, and she was shocked. She said Caitlin had an arm on her that just didn't stop...the girl can serve like no other! Not only that, she can get bump balls back over that no one else can get. As I watched the practice game that the girls were playing, I was totally impressed by the whole team. Several of the girls have played before, so that will definitely be to our advantage. They are gonna be great!! Let me just say, I am so glad we chose to let Caitlin try volleyball. She is definitely going to be a natural. I guess it also helps that she is head & shoulders taller than anyone else on the team. :) Her 1st game is November 9th, so I'll have to post some pics then. Cait told me on the way home that she never wants to play soccer again---she wants to play volleyball from now on! GO CAITLIN!! Momma is so proud of you!!

I Smell Greek

Post #2 for the day (what is it with me and 2 posts a day?!?)

This cold dry weather is really wreaking havoc on my skin. It makes me dry and itchy. My scalp really suffers in the fall/winter, and I create snow of my own all over my clothes. Very irritating.
So I decided to look up home remedies for dry scalp on the internet, and I came across several articles and discussions recommending olive oil. You simply massage it into your scalp, let it soak in for a while, then shampoo it out. Today was the day to try it out.
Let's just say it's very messy, but the smell...
Olive oil has such a distinctive smell, and the only way I can describe this interesting treatment is that it makes me smell Greek. Yum. We'll see if it helps the scalp--to be continued...

Not Friends

I love to sew---no news there. It is really a passion of mine. I love the moments when the house is quiet, the children are in bed, and John is studying. That is when I do my best work. I am sure no matter where life takes me I will be toting my sewing machine.
Today has taught me something. I HATE zippers. We are definitely NOT friends. Zippers are the biggest pain in the rump I have ever encountered.
This discovery came when I decided to be thrifty and make a sleep sack for Caroline instead of ponying up the money for one. It's about 1/2 the price to make one, so it only made sense to do so. John, the kids, and I went to the store last night and picked out the fleece. I had already decided that I would use snaps at the shoulders, but John gave me this big lecture about trying a zipper instead. He convinced me that it would be super easy and well worth it.
Hmph to him!
I found a free pattern on the internet, followed the directions carefully, and sewed the sleep sack. I then proceeded to add the zipper. Let's just say it's a good thing this "creation" is staying within the confining walls of the Haskell house.
It's cute and all, but MAN!!! NO MORE ZIPPERS FOR THIS GAL! :)
PS: If you don't know what a sleep sack is, it's the greatest idea since...well...I don't know what! It's a sack made of fleece that zips up the front and the baby wears it over the top of her pajamas instead of being covered up by a bunch of blankets. They can't wiggle out of it, thus staying much warmer at night. What prompted me to make it is Caroline has been up about 4 times a night for the past few COLD nights...she wiggled out from underneath her blankets and was icy cold. There you have it.

I Earned It!

Ok, really, I don't know why I am sharing this, because it is more pathetic than anything I have ever shared before. :) I just got an email from Ebay that was congratulating me on getting my purple star! You have to have 500 feedback before getting it, and I now officially have that. What makes this even more comical is that the email had a link to a printable page--a certificate that you can "hang on the wall" that pats you on the back for selling/buying so much crap that you earned the purple star.
Alright, I know. Amazing for all the wrong reasons huh. :)
I am officially even more of a dork than I thought!
PS: If you are interested in shopping cart covers, a 2T Old Navy monkey costume, or a nursing shirt, I have them listed on Ebay right now. My ebay ID is Simplyred21. Go. Hurry. Look. You know you want to help me earn a different color star! LOL
Seriously though...

Even Though It's Child #3, I'm Still Learning...

Here are some lessons learned in the past 5 days:

1. Don't put the baby's high chair anywhere in the vicinity of a house plant, even if you think she can't reach it---because she can! Also, freaking out won't make the Poison Control Center lady be any nicer or talk any faster (it wasn't poisonous by the way, just in case you wondered).

2. Feeding a baby raisins isn't always a great idea, even if they beg and plead for them. Sadly, they come out the other end whole and twice the size, resembling regular grapes. If you feed a baby a box of raisins, be prepared to pick them out of the crib, bedding, and jammies the next morning when the diaper explodes.

3. Babies LOVE toilets and dog bowls. The most brilliant invention was the hand sanitizer pump. We should have bought stock in them.

4. No matter how hard you try or how much you hover, you can't prevent every bump or bruise. A baby is going to explore (especially an 11 month old) and the fireplace is always enticing. You know how your mom used to tell you stuff can happen in the blink of an eye? She was right. See picture below for proof.

Happy Birthday Grandma!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GRANDMA!!
This post is a tad late, but I wanted to DEFINITELY include it. Her birthday was actually Saturday. A thousand apologies for being behind, but I have a good excuse--the camera got left at Mom & Dad's house over the weekend and I just now retrieved it. :)
We had a great time at Grandma Duke's birthday party Saturday evening. Caitlin helped Mimi make and decorate the birthday cake, and dinner was WONDERFUL! Mom made wonderful stuffed bell peppers (my favorite thing in the whole wide world by the way) and all the fixin's. We are so blessed to have Grandma in our lives. She is an amazing woman! I thank God everyday that she is here and that my children can know her and love her as much as I do. :) Here are some pics from the evening...
Caroline enjoyed dinner too

For The Love Of Rody

A front view of the Rody Pony
Christian doin' some ridin'
Caroline's turn! It's very serious business...by they way, do I detect some red hair?!? :)

That's right--Christian and Caroline have a new love. His name is Rody Pony (that's the actual brand name). The Rody Pony is by far the coolest toy ever. It's made of the same material as the bouncy/workout balls and is so much fun!! My aunt Jamie (who gives the coolest toys by the way) bought this for Christian 2 Christmas's ago, and the first time he tried it, he fell off. He got such a laugh from the family for this that he has been under the impression that falling off is the main idea. Forget rocking and bouncing! :)
Christian hasn't played with Rody much in the past few months, so I decided to let Caroline give it a try. SHE LOVES IT!! In fact, if you get her anywhere near Rody, she sticks her legs straight out to the side in a sitting position and gets ready to hop on. You can purchase a rocking base for when your child is little, and then when they get big enough, you just let them bounce around on it like a bouncy ball. I wish it came in adult size! Anyway, I am including a link to a website that sells them. If you have small children, they are really a wonderful thing to have---makes a great gift too!
PS: the website says they are for ages 2-4, but Caroline does great with it too

I Wasn't Born Yesterday

My children have never liked my cooking, no matter what it is. I could do it "just like Daddy does," and they still turn they're noses up at it. Yesterday evening was no exception. I made a pan of sausage, eggs, and shredded cheese and wrapped it up in tortillas--sort of a breakfast for dinner. Normally, the kids go crazy over this, but not since Mamma made it. Nope. Not happening. In fact, when John came through the door from work, I was in the middle of a "discussion" with them about eating what they are given. Christian gave in reluctantly and finished in a record time of 30 minutes. Caitlin, on the other hand, continued to take her sweet time in protest. After sending her back to the table 5 different times (we were all finished and moving on with the evening's activities), she came waltzing in to the living room with a mouth full of food and a deep sigh followed by, "Ok, I'm finally finished!"
For some reason, my radar of suspicion was going crazy. Something wasn't right.
"Did you eat EVERYTHING?" I asked.
"Yup! Every bite!" she said.
"You didn't spit anything into the trash did you?" I quizzed.
The silence was deafening.
Caitlin's eyes got as round as saucers and she immediately began to beg and plead her way out of a spanking for lying. Needless to say, the spanking wasn't necessary--I had a better idea. I went to the kitchen, dug in the trash, and found where she had hidden the rest of her dinner. Let's say, Caitlin can be very clever. She had found the egg carton and stuffed it inside the egg shells and closed the carton back how I had it when I threw it away. Pretty impressive actually. John came into the kitchen chuckling and told her to go sit in the dining room and wait until he could dig the food out and put it back on her plate for her to finish. He then pulled the ol' switcheroo and dipped some more food from the pan instead of giving her back the stuff that had been sitting in raw egg goo and shells in the trash. She whined, cried, fussed, grouched, cried some more, "accidentally" hit her gag reflex with her bites, and acted as if we were the most cruel parents in the world for making her eat something she had already thrown away. By this time, she had been at the table for over an hour, and it was time for her friend Mariah to pick her up for church. The doorbell rang as she was shoving the last massive bite in her mouth. Her whole attitude changed when Mariah peeked in. The bite was gone instantly and she was out the door and on her way to sweet freedom from the "meanie-hateful parents." Honestly, it's kinda fun to see what stuff your own children will try to pull on you--stuff that you attempted to pull on your own parents. :)

A Blanket Statement

At the craft show this past weekend, my friend Keri pointed out a booth that had very cool baby blankets. They were made of regular fleece on one side and this fuzzy/shaggy fleece on the other side. We both loved the design and the softness of the blankets, but neither of us wanted to pay $35-$40 for one. Instead, I found the same kind of fabric at Joann Fabrics today and made my own. This one is for Caroline, but Caitlin and Christian have already put in their orders for one as well. :) What makes this blanket even more awesome--the fabric was on sale! WooHoo!
It's black fuzzy/shaggy fleece and hot pink w/polka dots fleece with "Princess Caroline" embroidered on one of the corners. It's gonna rock to have this during the winter!

Playin' Catch Up

The weekend was fast and furious. I had my 1st craft show of the year and did fairly well. I made enough to get into the big show of the year, Holiday Productions, taking place in mid-November. I am so excited! I saw a lot of people I knew, has visits from friends, and got to hang out with Misty all weekend--so fun!
Yesterday, John and Caitlin were both off, so it was a day of relaxation. It's nice to have that once in a while, especially after I have spent the past month sewing my fingers to the bone. :) Yesterday was also Misty's daughter Jacey's 3rd birthday. She had a party at the school park by their house, and it was a blast! Jacey wore a black leotard, big fluffy pink tutu, and cute pink camo bows with pigtails. She is such a "miss thing", and she KNOWS she is a princess! Her cake was so cute--and decorated by her I might add. It was a pink butterfly with multi-color skittles and gumdrops all over it. YUM! I hope she had a fun time because our kids certainly did!
After the party, John dropped me off at Abuelo's to meet with my sweet friend from high school, Lindsay Welch. We were in the same class and John and her husband Jeremy were in the same class. Also, they had a daughter 6 weeks after we had Caitlin; her name is Rebekah. What's even more fun is they had a daughter 6 weeks after we had Christian, and her name is Savannah. Jeremy is in the Army, so they are in the process of moving to California. Lindsay came through just for a short visit, and it was wonderful to see her again. I hadn't seen her in 10 years! Here's a pic of us at the restaurant. Hopefully next time she comes through town she can come over and stay for a while.

Just How Sad It Is...

As I was driving home from taking Caitlin to school this morning, I was reflecting on how my life has changed since having children. More than that, I realized how it changes with EACH child. Let me explain...
When Caitlin was small, I still made sure I didn't leave the house without makeup on and hair fixed, I tanned at least 4 times a week, my car was spick & span, and I could wear anything I wanted. With Christian, I still made sure I had makeup on before leaving the house, but the hair could be in a ponytail and that was okay. I tanned about 2 times a week during spring/summer, and my car was still very clean. The clothing, however, was a different story. I began to realize that I didn't have a teenager's figure anymore, so I stuck with a more "grown up" look. With Caroline, it has ALL changed. When I take Caitlin to school, I am still in my pj's, no bra (but a hooded jacket on just in case I am stopped for speeding and don't want to totally expose myself), no makeup, and hair not brushed. I am now officially pasty-white and haven't tanned in months. My car looks like a toy box threw up in it. As for clothing---whatever fits and doesn't accentuate my midsection or bottom is acceptable.
I was watching a show on channel 23 the other night while I was sewing, and it really made me pause. It was called Tim Gunn's Guide To Style, and the basic idea was that Tim Gunn (a famous designer) and his assistant pick a woman to help out style-wise. They were visiting a Hispanic woman that had 2 small children and a very hectic life. They went through her closet and totally made fun of the fact that she had capris in EVERY color of the rainbow, as well as frumpy shirts, no dresses, and horribly old and ratty bras/underwear. They made piles of what to keep, donate, and throw away. Needless to say, she did not get to keep a single item of clothing! I was stitching up a car seat cover and thinking to myself, "My gosh, it must be really sad to be that out of style." Then it hit me: THAT LOOKED EXACTLY LIKE MY CLOSET.
She was me in every area of her life: too busy to care how she dressed and too much of a momma to care about spending money on herself. What's worse---I went and looked and I literally have capris in every color! :)
Being a momma is wonderful and I wouldn't change it for a thing...not even for a new wardrobe. I am so blessed to have my family, friends, and wonderful life that small things like fashion take a back seat. I'm just gonna sit back and wait for the day when wearing old ratty shirts, kiwi-colored striped pajama pants, and no makeup in public actually becomes the style!

Update Time and Sittin' Pretty

I like to do this kind of post every now and then, just to give an update on everyone in the household...here it goes!

Caitlin--She is doing great in school and really enjoying her year. We signed her up for volleyball, and the first game is November 9th. She is very excited, and I hope she likes it. John took her to the gym on Saturday while the younger two kids and I took naps. Cait got to actually do a cardio workout with him, and she did great! She keeps asking to go back and work out again...I love her enthusiasm and wish I had the same. :)

Christian--He has been really working on his colors and ABC's lately. Everywhere we go, he points to things to "quiz" us on the colors, just in case we forget them. He recently found a deck of Baby Uno Cards in his room, and he is crazy about them! We play several games of Uno everyday. We are looking to get Christian in to a gymnastics class this fall at Amarillo College, so hopefully he will use up some of that energy!

Caroline--She continues to grow and get into things. The other day, she and Christian discovered that pots & wooden spoons make great music...that is, until the wooden spoons became weapons. Caroline is very interactive with Christian and definitely gives him a run for his money. She sprouted 3 new teeth in the last month as well. I swear, by her 1st birthday, she's going to have all of the teeth in her head! I am including a picture at the bottom of Caroline's newest discovery---chairs. She has 2 that are just short enough for her to sit on, and she will stay occupied for a good hour just sitting and getting up.

John--He is trying to finish up all of his schoolwork. As it stands, he will have everything completed at the end of November and finally have his Bachelor's! Yeah! Next month, instead of working so much at BSA, he will be teaching some of the EMT classes at Amarillo College in the evening. I am excited that he's doing this, so that way he can come home at night and I'm not stuck sleeping alone!

Me--I have been furiously sewing for the first craft show of the year, the Sharing Hope Ministries Craft Show being held at the Civic Center on October 6th and 7th. Later this week, I will post all of the information about it in case any of you want to come check out the booth. As most of you know, Misty is my partner in crime when it comes to craft shows. We have a great time, and would love to see any and all of you there!

I hope you all have a wonderful week!

Blogger's Anonymous, Here I Come

After John left for work this morning, I had the most crazy dream. Here is how it went:

It was winter time, and I was going about my morning routine after dropping Caitlin off at school when John came walking through the door with a frown on his face. He explained how his VW Passat had stranded him between our house and Pantex. Apparently, he had been able to revive it long enough to turn around and come home. It promptly died in the garage and he couldn't restart it. (For some reason, we lived in a different house. The new house was way smaller, not a 2-story, and the front of the garage--where the front of the cars are--faced the rest of the house) I told him to take his Bronco II and get back to work, but he decided he would take the day off instead. The next thing I know, it's evening. John and I were in the garage looking at the dead Passat trying to figure out what to do. Mom had come over to watch the kids since we were preoccupied. Suddenly, I heard a loud VVVVVRRRRROOOOMMMMM come from the Passat. The next thing I know, it's driving through the house and crashing through walls! It put a huge hole in practically every wall, and all John could do was just stand there and watch it. We were both in shock. After watching the Passat leave our property and start driving/crashing into the neighbors' houses, I ran after it. I was yelling at John to go get his stupid car, and he said, "I really could care less if I ever see it again. Let it go."
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!? I ran as far as I could, still didn't find it, then came back to the house. John had disappeared, and Mom and the kids were sitting in the living room staring at the damage. "Well, at least you have house insurance Mel," she said. With a deep sigh, I went to the bedroom to retrieve the camera. I came dragging back through the living room, head down, camera in hand. "That's a great idea honey! Start taking pictures of the damage for the insurance while it's fresh," Mom said. "Insurance? Naaaahhhh. I was gonna take pictures for the blog. My friends are never gonna believe this!" I responded.
Then I woke up.

Sad isn't it? :) When I called John and told him about the dream, all he could say was "Yeeeeaaaahhhh, that's pretty pathetic. You really do have a blogging problem." LOL

very aMAZEing!

Mom found something very cool here in Amarillo--it's a CORN MAZE (or maize maze if you like that sort of thing lol). There was a story about it in the newspaper, and it looked so cool that we couldn't resist going. On Friday evening, Mom, me, my aunt Jamie, Caitlin, Christian, and Caroline all piled in the mom mobile and headed out there. Let me say it was truly amazing! There were about 4 students up on deer stands throughout the maze to help if you got lost (which we did), and you had to pick a "passport" before you entered that had questions that you had to answer in order to find your way around. There were 10 stations, a cool bridge with a slide, LOTS of corn, funny signs, a cow train, a pumpkin patch, a mini-maze made out of hay for toddlers, live farm animals, a corn cannon, and refreshments. It was a ton of fun---but if you go, remember to take mosquito repellent. We got eaten alive! :) Here are some pics from the trip. I highly recommend it!
A funny story from the adventure:
When we got lost and couldn't find the #6 station, we asked one of the girls up on a deer stand to help us out. I asked her which way to go, and she said, "I don't know. Hold on and I'll ask." She radioed someone else in the maze and then told us to go back a few rows and make a right. We did what she said, but in 5 minutes, we were right back by her stand...at a dead end. As we were turning around AGAIN, I said, "Hey! That wasn't the right way!" All she could say was "Oops." :) I lost all confidence in the people on the deer stands at that point and made sure I had the map in front of me at all times to be able to get out!
Every few minutes, Christian would pipe up and say, "I'm never gonna get out of here!" or "I want to get out!" It took us about an hour, but we finally made it.
Signs like this were posted throughout
Christian, Mom, Jamie, and Caitlin in the corn
A girl on the deer stand offered to take a group pic--it turned out cute!
A long stretch of the maze--the corn kept getting taller
Caitlin & Christian on the cow train
Another cow train pic--we didn't get to do the pumpkin patch this time because it got too dark-next time!
This is a pic from the newspaper of what the maze looks like. It's design is the WT buffalo.
