Frustrations With Food

No, this is not a post about weight. It has nothing to do with the intake of food. What I'm referring to are my frustrations with the current way we buy food. I really want to believe that there is something better AND cheaper.
I like Wal-Mart, don't get me wrong. There's nothing better than having the ability to buy milk, socks, and Wii games all in one visit. I love the fact that their food is fairly inexpensive. The problem here is I often wonder just what they have to do (compromise) to get it that cheap.
We decided to pay a visit to United last night, and walking in just felt like a totally new shopping experience. The produce was shiny, there wasn't misplaced merchandise behind the boxes of cereal, they had an organic foods area that was awesome, and everything was just---brighter.
I guess what frustrates me is that I want United quality at Wal-Mart prices. Is that so impossible? I just want to know that I am giving my children something good without worrying that I'm gonna break the bank in doing so.
Here's an example of what I mean:
gallon of milk at United: $4.99-6.99
gallon of milk at Wallys: $3.99-5.99

case of 24 bottles of water at United: $4.xx
case of 24 bottles of water at Wally's: $3.xx

See what I mean? Even in just 2 items Wally's is cheaper. Not always better though. Maybe I'd be satisfied if the quality of stores like Wally's went up. I just don't like that our world feeds on naivety. Hmmmm.....I'd really like for there to be a Whole Foods here. Not that it would solve the problem, but it would definitely be a fun place to shop! :)

One of the things I miss the most from Austin is Whole Foods. What I wouldn't give for just one trip through there. I was going to tell you to check coupons.com and to google coupons and sometime you can get some really good coupons that make it worth your while to go to United instead of Wal-Mart. We have switched primarily to a no-carb diet and as much organic stuff as we can, thus increasing the amount of money we spend on a monthly basis b/c meat and fresh veggies cost more than bread and pasta!! I am completely with you on wanting United quality at Wal-Mart price. Those coupons have helped that quite a bit and also shopping at United for what they have on sale that week. Not always exactly what I want (ie. they have boneless skinless chicken breast tenderloins on sale this week instead of just breasts, but it all cooks the same), but most of the time well worth the compromise. Hope you are doing well. How are things going with the house? Has anyone put a contract on your house yet?

I am not a mom, but one of my favorite websites is moneysavingmom.com all kinds of great deals every week! I shop at walmart, but I refuse to by their meat, after going in one evening and watching them doing returns and placing meat that had sat at the front of the store for who knows how long, back on the shelve.

BTW, I have no idea, how I got to your blog. I was just blog surfing tonight (going link to link).

I TOTALLY agree! I am tired of going grocery shopping at Walmart and then going to United to buy fruit and meat! It's crazy!

I agree. I shop at Wally world but I would love to shop at United. The thing I like is the people taking your groceries to the car for you. It's great when you have small children!
